Zermatt is a well known Swiss place for skiing, but that’s also a fantastic destination for Summer holidays. Paragliding, hiking, discovering green landscapes and the snowy Matterhorn… There are plenty of activities. And what a better hotel to stay in than the five-star Mont Cervin Palace.
Finding a good mountain destination for Summer is not easy. But there is a jewel in the South of Switzerland named Zermatt, where you can enjoy great landscapes, including the famous Matterhorn, and many alpine activities. Oh, and that’s a full pedestrian town!
My partner and I decided to stay in the fancy Mont Cervin Palace, right in the middle of Zermatt at 10-minute walking distance from the train station. This hotel is an institution since 1852 and you can’t miss it when walking through this lovely city.
Common areas
The main building is quite impressive. This Swiss Alps style residence – part of Michel Reybier Hospitality group – is perfectly integrated in Zermatt and surrounded by restaurants and shops. And like Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel in Interlaken, it is actually more a resort than a simple hotel.
When you open the door of this elegant property, you enter a world of tradition and luxury. Tradition thanks to its faultless wooden design, with many natural materials giving a feeling of warm welcoming atmosphere. And luxury thanks the choice of contemporary furniture, the number of services offered and the high attention to details. Actually everything looks brand new!
I especially liked the Joseph’s Bar and Terrace ambiance, a lovely and quiet place during the day which turns into THE place to be in the evening for the classy and wealthy. Also one of the most beautiful bar design I ever seen, by the way.
The huge Spa is for sure the hotel’s biggest strength. The 1,700sqm facilities include two indoor and outdoor pools with water jets, two whirlpools, a Finnish sauna, a steam sauna, a sun deck… Well, you got it. On top of these spaces, a state-of-art fitness center is available.
Room
We were very lucky to stay in an Alpine Suite Matterhorn, a cosy one-bedroom suite with a large balcony offering stunning views over the city and Matterhorn mountain (Mont Cervin in French).
This suite fits perfectly in the rest of the hotel’s design, based on neutral tones, wood and luxury furniture. The dressing area in the bedroom is particularly pleasant. Like the rest of the residence, everything looks brand new thanks to a perfect maintenance.
Not to be missed, the bathroom with its green marble basins. Rather small but equipped with the most high-end and modern equipment, as well as full range of Seiler Hotels bath amenities.
Dining
We experienced several dining places at Mont Cervin Palace. First, we had breakfast every morning at Le Restaurant, the chalet restaurant with both an American buffet and a-la-carte orders. Selection of cheeses is gorgeous!
Then for lunch we tried out Joseph’s Terrace and its casual food. I had a delicious homemade with fresh food Club Sandwich and my partner took a Ceasar Salad. Two classics brilliantly executed, served quickly, exactly what we needed.
Finally we booked a dinner at Grill Le Cervin, a more fine-dining venue, with a three-course service. I ordered a lobster bisque served with caviar as starter, followed by a grilled tomahawk – Black Angus Beef – with vegetables as main, and a delicious crème brûlée to achieve this journey. A true culinary experience!
Service Quality
From Reception to Housekeeping, we enjoyed an impeccable service. Our room was systematically made while we were at breakfast or out for hiking, and turn down service was managed the same way. Very efficient.
I would like to thank the Concierge staff who were also super useful for trek recommendation and restaurant booking. With such a high level of exigency, you feel like home at Mont Cervin Palace.
Conclusion
As a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Mont Cervin Palace offers great five-star services and a true prime location in the city. That’s a luxury cocoon in perfect condition, like if it opened just yesterday. I can’t imagine how amazing the Ski Room must be at Winter time (like the one we had at Le Strato in Courchevel)! In other words, the place to stay in Zermatt.

Mont Cervin Palace opened in 1852 and has been refurbished in 2012 the latest. It is composed of 150 room and suites. I stayed in an Alpine Suite Matterhorn, around 55sqm, which public rate starts at CHF 1,075/night.
