After exploring Zurich canton and its luxury hotels, I headed to Interlaken and stayed at the flamboyant Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. A grande dame with a long history and luxurious facilities, ideally located in that lovely Swiss city.
The Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel is a bit like the Majestic Barrière in Cannes or the Fullerton in Singapore. It’s an unmissable luxury hotel settled in the most luxurious shopping street of Interlaken, a beautiful Swiss city surrounded by two lakes. Its look is very eye-catching thanks to an impressive dome, a yellowish facade and an open-air flowerbed right on the street.
Its convenient location also allows to discover the beauty of Interlaken and its lakes at walking distance. Moreover some e-bikes are available at Reception on complimentary basis to visit the region even further. What a great idea from this Michel Reybier Hospitality hotel!
Common areas
This Interlaken’s grande dame is actually more a resort than a hotel. Main visible area consists in two historical buildings, the Pension Victoria and the Jungfrau Hotel that were grouped in 1899 with a central building crowned with a dome.
The list of internal facilities is just huge: the classical Victoria Bar, the fine-dining restaurant La Terrasse, the more casual Sapori Italian restaurant, a 24-hour gym, outdoor and indoor tennis courts… And a beautiful vegetal lounge area on the street side, directly on the sidewalk. A true proximity to Interlaken’s city life.
Climax of Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel’s visit is definitely the Spa Nescens, an opulent 5,500sqm area dedicated to indulgence and relaxation with indoor/outdoor pools. Not to mention the high quality of Swiss made Nescens products and its better-aging properties. I definitely recommend to go for a 60-min signature
Room
I had the chance to stay in a Deluxe Double Room on Victoria wing’s first floor, with a large terrace facing Jungfrau summit. A true breathtaking view that triggers a wow effect immediately!
Room’s style is classical with modern tones and a neutral decoration. The wooden floor is just great and I didn’t suffer from internal noises (which is usually the case with wooden floors). It reminds me another luxury residence I visited some years ago in Lausanne, also with an amazing view over Swiss nature.
Bathroom is pretty standard, a bit dated but this is balanced thanks to the very good Molton Brown amenities. That’s rare to find such nice quality bath products in entry-level rooms.
One tip: book a Club room, you will get a higher level of exclusiveness and services in the hotel. More privacy as well.
Dining
Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel offers a true culinary journey to its guests. Dinner at La Terrasse was fantastic: the chef Stefan Beer proposes a fine-dining menu composed of local products only, no more than 40km from Interlaken. I particularly enjoyed the Oona caviar – pure Swiss alpine caviar – and the salmon trout.
That’s really THE place to be and to be seen on evenings in Interlaken. On the opposite side of the hotel is located Sapori restaurant. This Italian place opened for lunch and dinner offers homemade casual food at a reasonable price (for Switzerland). For lunch I enjoyed a nice “Miss Italia” pizza – cooked in a traditional oven – and I tried also their scallops risotto which was just delicious.
Breakfast takes place at La Terrasse with a buffet style. Because of COVID-19 situation, only the chef is serving guests for everything like eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc. Actually, that’s a benefit in term of service :)
Service Quality
The hotel has such a long history that this transpires on staff engagement and the level of service offered. From Front Desk to Housekeeping, without missing restaurant waiters… Service was faultless. I have to mention especially the Concierge team, who were very helpful. They proposed me a nice biking itinerary around Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
Conclusion
Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel is definitely the place to stay in Interlaken. It is known and recognized as the most beautiful hotel of the city. Offering an impressive Spa and great services, it is also ideally located to discover the region’s beauty. In other words, that’s a perfect place for a weekend of indulgence!
