The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has scheduled this year’s Brake Safety Week for Aug. 20-26 with a focus on brake lining/pad violations.  Are your trucks prepared?  Truck Service, Inc can help!  We’re offering FREE brake inspections to give you peace of mind or identify issues.

For more information on brake systems, brake safety, or our FREE brake inspection contact your local Truck Service location.

From CVSA:

During Brake Safety Week, commercial motor vehicle inspectors highlight the importance of brake systems by conducting inspections of their components and removing commercial motor vehicles found to have brake-related out-of-service violations from our roadways until those violations are corrected.

Throughout Brake Safety Week, CVSA-certified inspectors will conduct their usual inspections; however, in addition, they will be reporting brake-related inspection and violation data to the Alliance. CVSA will compile that data and publish a press release this fall with the results.

“The focus of this year’s Brake Safety Week is on the condition of the brake lining and pad,” said CVSA President Maj. Chris Nordloh with the Texas Department of Public Safety. “Brake lining and pad issues may result in vehicle violations and could affect a motor carrier’s safety rating.”

When inspectors conduct the brake portion of a Level I, IV or V Inspection, they will:

  • Check for missing, non-functioning, loose or cracked parts.
  • Check for contaminated, worn, cracked and missing linings or pads.
  • Check for S-cam flipover.
  • Listen for audible air leaks around brake components and lines.
  • Check that slack adjusters are the same length (from center of S-cam to center of clevis pin) and the air chambers on each axle are the same size.
  • Ensure the brake system maintains air pressure between 90-100 psi (620-690 kPa) and measure pushrod travel.
  • Inspect for non-manufactured holes (e.g., rust holes, holes created by rubbing or friction, etc.) and broken springs in the spring brake housing section of the parking brake.
  • Inspect required brake system warning devices, such as anti-lock braking system (ABS) malfunction lamp(s) and low air-pressure warning devices.
  • Inspect the tractor protection system, including the bleedback system on the trailer.
  • Ensure the breakaway system is operable on the trailer.

Brake safety awareness, education and outreach are major elements of the Brake Safety Week campaign. CVSA has outlined the brake-system inspection procedure (noted above) so that drivers and motor carriers know exactly what inspectors will be checking during roadside inspections. This transparency aims to remind drivers and motor carriers to take proactive steps to ensure their commercial motor vehicles are safe and compliant with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce the braking capacity and stopping distance of trucks or buses, which poses a serious safety risk.

CVSA’s  is dedicated to improving commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America. The goal is to reduce the number of highway crashes caused by faulty braking systems on commercial motor vehicles by conducting roadside inspections and educating drivers, mechanics, owner-operators and others on the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation.

Please join us in congratulating Bruce Zavokta (Outside Sales Representative, Cleveland market) on his retirement, effective December 15, 2022!

Bruce joined Truck Service, Inc a little over 5 years ago as the Outside Sales Representative for the Cleveland market supporting EAB Truck Service and Cleveland Spring.  He has been an invaluable and important team member and vital to the fantastic growth we have seen in the Cleveland market over the last few years. Bruce is and always has been a true team player – willing to do whatever it takes. His full time presence will be greatly missed.  With that said, Bruce has agreed to continue in 2023 on a part time basis, primarily handling Municipality accounts. Bruce has always had a gift for building rapport with customers enabling us to help serve them better.  One of our favorite quotes from him is when he’s told “I don’t speak to salesmen”, Bruce’s response “I’m not a salesman, I’m your vendor representative.”

When he’s not still helping Truck Service part time, you’ll be able to find him enjoying time on Lake Erie boating, fishing, and participating in his lakeside community leadership with his wife Judy.

His daily contributions, experience, advice, and friendship will be missed.  Congratulations Bruce on your retirement and thank you for your contributions to Truck Service!

We recently celebrated the retirement of Bob Wilson (Field Service Technician, Indianapolis Spring) with family, friends, and current & former co-workers.  Bob’s impact personally and professionally on those around him has been immeasurable and irreplaceable.  His technical knowledge, experience, and work ethic are second to none but his drive to help others, customers and colleagues alike, with patience and a smile is what will be missed the most.

His primary role has been diagnosing, repairing, and installing air conditioning and automatic lubrication systems on heavy-duty vehicles and off-road equipment throughout the Midwest.  He’s also been a go-to guy for help with any challenging diagnostics and troubleshooting.  The master of many trades and always willing to help, he’s also assisted with many facility improvement projects and new branch location openings.

Bob has been married for 28 years to his wife Sandra.  Together they have two adult children.  He’s also a pillar in his community, providing countless hours of service to his church.  In retirement, Bob is looking forward to tinkering with his many projects from cars to pinball machines in his “Garage Mahal”.

Bob, thank you for 32 years of dedicated service at Truck Service and 46 years to the heavy-duty truck repair industry!

[Indianapolis, IN, October 1, 2020] – Truck Service Inc. (TSI), a premier independent provider of repair and maintenance services for light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, celebrates 25 years of business on October 1, 2020.

“This is an incredible milestone for our company. Our first core value, treat customers and team members with respect, compassion and professionalism is our foundation. With this in mind, we’ve achieved success through the hard work and dedication of our team members to provide an exceptional customer experience – regardless if it’s the customers’ first visit or hundredth visit. It means both our customers and team members believe the work we do is valuable,” shares Dennis Meyer, President of Truck Service.

In 1995, three forward-thinking entrepreneurs, Darrell Fife, Don Jones, and Dennis Meyer established Truck Service, Inc. by acquiring five heavy-duty truck parts and service facilities located in Indiana, Ohio, and Florida. Truck Service has roots in the 1930s when Cleveland Spring and EAB Truck Service (Ohio) and Indianapolis Spring (Indiana) were originally established. The Horton Company (Jacksonville, FL) was started in the 1940’s. After three different corporate ownerships/acquisitions in the 1980s and 1990s, these operations became the foundation of Truck Service, Inc. in 1995.

In 2008, TSI acquired two Warner Spring locations (Indianapolis, IN and Noblesville, IN) with the Noblesville location being rebranded as Truck Service Noblesville. In May 2017, Truck Service opened Truck Service Columbus (Indiana). With the latest acquisition in July 2018, Black’s Spring and Alignment (Zanesville, Ohio), TSI currently has a total of eight locations.

Truck Service provides repair, maintenance and parts for all brands of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles including suspension, brakes, alignments, steering, A/C and heating, preventative maintenance, automatic lubrication, DOT inspections and general repair. In addition, manufacturing and fabrication capabilities include leaf springs, tubes and hoses, and brake lining. In honor of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Truck Service, along with American Trucking Associations and the entire trucking industry, is thanking the millions of professional truck drivers who work every day to deliver America’s freight to our communities.

During National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, September 13-19, 2020, will mark a special celebration of America’s Highway Heroes and pay tribute to all that professional truck drivers have done to help carry America through the coronavirus pandemic and keep our economy and communities moving forward. As essential workers, the efforts and contributions of frontline truck drivers are deserving of America’s gratitude and appreciation.

Celebrated annually, this year’s National Truck Driver Appreciation Week takes on a special meaning due to the spread of COVID-19. Professional truck drivers stepped up when they were needed most and have kept the economy on its feet despite facing unprecedented obstacles.

There are more than 3.5 million professional truck drivers nationwide that deliver the goods and products our communities need. Everything from the food on the shelves in grocery stores, to the medical equipment in hospitals – 70% of America’s freight tonnage is annually delivered by truck, which amounts to over 10 billion tons. These professional men and women log over 400 billion miles every year and roughly, 80 percent of U.S. communities depend solely on the trucking industry as the only method to receive their goods and commodities.

This week is a way to show appreciation to the professional men and women who not only deliver our goods safely, securely, and on time, but also keep our highways safe.

To learn more about how essential truck drivers are to their communities and the economy, or for more information on National Truck Driver Appreciation Week 2020, please visit www.ntdaw.org.

Brake Safety Week will take place August 23 – 29, 2020.

All Truck Service locations will be supporting this event by offering complimentary multi-point brake inspections for all commercial Class 3-8 vehicles for the month of August.

Brake Safety Week is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) each year. Enforcement officials will inspect commercial vehicles throughout the week and vehicles that have critical out-of-service brake violations or other critical vehicle inspection item violations, will be restricted from traveling until the violations are corrected.

Commercial vehicle brake systems on commercial motor vehicles are comprised of components that work together to slow and stop a vehicle. The brake hoses and tubing are essential for the proper operation of those systems. Brake hoses and tubing must be properly attached, undamaged, without leaks and appropriately flexible. Brake hoses and tubing are an important part of your braking system so when they do fail, they can cause problems for your entire braking system and your vehicle. Brake system inspections are critical!

Brake Safety Week is part of law enforcement’s effort to reduce brake-related crashes by conducting roadside inspections and identifying and removing unsafe commercial motor vehicles from roadways.

For more information on brake systems and brake safety, contact your local Truck Service location or learn more at Truck Service Brake Systems.

This Independence Day, take a step back and cherish your life and the country you live in while appreciating the sacrifices people made to give us independence today.

Factoid: Who started the 4th of July as a holiday?

The 4th of July was celebrated as our Independence Day in 1777. John Adams predicted in a letter to his wife Abigail that Americans would celebrate their Independence Day on July 2. Off by two days — not too bad for government work!

We hope everyone has a safe and rewarding 4th of July!

Our team also had the opportunity to tour the facilities of our partner and premier NTT IndyCar Series team, Arrow McLaren SP.

Dayton Parts, an established Truck Service partner, has introduced a new heavy-duty coil spring product line – CargoMaxx HD.

Their new heavy-duty coil springs are custom designed to provide increased load handling capability and improved ride quality. An easy upgrade for vehicles used in continuous heavy hauling conditions, CargoMaxx HD coil springs are ideal for utility vehicles, pickups, SUVs, vans, and motor homes.

This new product line is available at all Truck Service locations.

Which Design is Right for Your Vehicle?

What’s the difference between Standard vs Variable Rate Suspension Springs?

Standard Rate

Linear Rate Springs have one defined spring rate per inch of deflection throughout most of their deflection range. This design is for applications with constant load and empty ride is less of an issue. Features include:

  • Constant load
  • Added roll stability and safety

Variable Rate

Progressive Rate Springs are generally used for applications with significant load changes and have less effect on empty ride. These springs are easily identified by varied spacing between the coils. Features include:

  • Smooth transition for a comfortable empty ride
  • Added roll stability and safety when loaded

Upgrade Your Vehicle

CargoMaxx HD coil springs improve load handling capability and ride quality of loaded vehicles while reducing driver fatigue and increasing safety and efficiency.

  • Custom-designed for additional load handling capability
  • Improves handling, ride quality and cornering stability
  • A must for coil spring-equipped vehicles with diesel engines and/or snowplows
  • Excellent load handling solution for fleet vehicles
  • No maintenance required
  • Reduces driver fatigue
  • Manufactured in North America

For more information about CargoMaxx HD, contact any of our Truck Service locations.

Bob is the lead Field Service Technician for the Indianapolis Spring location. He started his career with Truck Service over 30 years ago and is without a doubt, the “go-to” guy in many facets of our daily operations.

You’ll mostly find him diagnosing, repairing and installing air conditioning and automatic lubrication systems in the field at customer sites and facilities. He also performs these jobs in-house at our Indianapolis Spring location. He’s our lead technician when it comes to air conditioning service and repair! It’s been said that Bob can break down the molecular structure of R134A (pretty darn close). He also travels to our other locations in Indiana, Ohio and Florida for air conditioning and automatic lubrication system installations.

Bob holds a MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) Certification and works in the depths of many central Indiana coal mines maintaining the climate control systems of their heavy equipment (Yellow Iron). A tough job to say the least as he’s not only claustrophobic, but also afraid of heights – neither of which slow him down!

As if that wasn’t enough, over the years Bob has managed and assisted with many of our facility building projects and branch location openings.

Bob has been married for 26 years to his lovely wife Sandra. They have two adult children and he’s a pillar in his community. Bob may work as many hours with his church as he does at his full-time job with Indianapolis Spring.

Bob is Truck Service and Indianapolis Spring in every respect and we’re extremely fortunate to have him.

Factoid: Who came up with the 4th of July as a holiday?

On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Thomas Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on, the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

We hope everyone has a safe and rewarding 4th of July holiday!

This past May (2019), Truck Service sponsored Lauren Davis, an accelerated nursing student at the University of Indianapolis, on a medical support trip to Ecuador. Davis, along with 11 other nursing students, traveled abroad to help those less fortunate.

The group of 12 nursing students joined other health care providers such as doctors, registered nurses, community health nurses, and pharmacists. Their purpose, travel to various rural villages throughout the mountains of Ecuador to provide medical aid, education, and health services. Over a ten-day period, they went to five separate villages where they set up clinics to help these communities in need.

Due to their remote/rural locations, the people in these villages have medical conditions that go undiagnosed and untreated. Most of these populations lack the ability to be transported to the nearest city hospital and even if they had transportation, most if not all, lack the income to pay for the desperately needed assistance and treatments. Unfortunately, this leads to many of the inhabitants being forced to live with an illness or to die from diseases and other medical conditions that could otherwise be easily treated and prevented.

When asked what her favorite experience during the trip, Davis stated “I have never had the chance to participate in a trip like this, but I have always known it was something I wanted to do. Narrowing down a specific experience or set of experiences as my favorite is just impossible. I would have to say it was the people I had the chance to help. I wish I could show you their faces when we opened the clinics. Everyone was always so happy and excited. Even the people who were truly sick and not feeling well always had a smile on their face. It really helped me to realize the impact we had on these individual’s lives.”

Truck Service - Medical Mission Trip

She added “There truly is no better feeling than helping individuals who need it and genuinely appreciate the help they receive. There were crowds of children who would walk us down to the clinics every day and basically follow us around non-stop. I was so adorable and made all of us feel so appreciated.”

When asked about what she learned about herself and the villages she served, Davis stated, “The greatest thing I learned about myself while on this trip was that this type of work is what I am on this planet to perform. It is very special to be able to go into my career as a nurse knowing that this is the exact path I am meant to be on. Not many people are lucky enough to have their life life’s purpose confirmed, but I was. This experience helped to not only reassure the path I am on, but also allowed me to practice and critique my clinical nursing skills. I believe I will be a better nurse for going on this trip.”

Davis continued, “The greatest thing I learned about the villages that I visited was the work ethic of the individuals I had the pleasure to serve. The big cities I saw were not much different from our own cities here in the United States. They were big, bustling with traffic and people, and nothing like the small villages of the Andes Mountains. In these villages, individuals work well into their eighties and nineties. Elderly individuals would come in with joint complaint and our first question would be, ‘Do you still work?’ Every time the answer was ’of course.’”

Truck Service was a contributing sponsor to Davis’ round trip airfare to Ecuador, her meals, transportation, accommodations, and supplies. More importantly, it was an honor to help her fulfill a life-long dream to travel abroad and serve those in need.

He has spent the majority of his time at our Cleveland Spring location (39 years) until he recently accepted a transfer to EAB Truck Service in Valley View, OH in March of this year.

Dwayne’s life-long profession has been as a heavy-duty suspension mechanic. He has held a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) since 1992. Dwayne is a positive influence, and he is an ideal role model for our other team members.

He recently received the President’s Spot Bonus Award for his great attitude and seamless transition from the Cleveland Spring location to the EAB Truck Service facility.

Dwayne has two sons (Dwayne Jr. and Derrell) and one granddaughter (age 4). When not at work he enjoys bowling and spending time with his family. Fortunately for us, he has no immediate plans for retirement!
