Lunch at Albergue 1601
Once you’re settled into your accommodation it’s time to sample some of the cuisine of the island. Albergue 1601 is a charming restaurant set in a colonial building that’s truly picture perfect. It’s one of the best preserved buildings on the island, having stood in its place since, as the name suggests, approximately 1601.
The St. Lazarus Quarter is a beautiful district to explore anyway, but this gem of Portuguese architecture is really special. Once you get inside you’ll start to notice the unique cultural blend that this building boasts, mixing European and Asian.
Menu seamlessly blends Portuguese dishes with Macanese cuisine, giving rise to an exciting menu including a richly spiced seafood and rice soup, delectable crispy pork and the typical Macanese dessert of serradura, or sawdust cake, though don’t be put off by the name, it’s sticky and sweet, not at all like its namesake.
Book a table in the courtyard, enjoying a lunch with a glass of wine in such beautiful surroundings is fantastic.
Dine at Clube Militar de Macau
Once you’ve enjoyed all that Albergue 1601 and the Venetian has to offer, it’s time for another snack and a touch of history. Built in 1870 the Clube Militar de Macau was originally a private military club. It’s been restored to keep the pink and white facade looking as pristine as the day it was first painted. Its also had a grand reopening as a restaurant instead, allowing people to visit and dine since 1995.
The club has grown in popularity since then, so booking is a must. The hustle and bustle of downtown Macau can be quite overwhelming but this building offers an air of serenity and tranquillity that is hard to emulate. Inside the wide plank floorboards are made from light teak and the dull hum of ceiling fans transports you right back to life in the colonial era.
There’s the option of a buffet, which far from being pre-heated and packaged is truly delicious. However, for MOP$500 you can enjoy the full degustation menu, which is a seriously special experience. If you really want to push the boat out then opt for wine pairing as well.
