My last experience with a luxury hotel in NYC was quite a disaster, so I had huge expectations for my next stay. I carefully selected the Ludlow Hotel, in East Village, and discovered a stunning place incarnating brilliantly the trendy New York atmosphere.
After a tough 1h30 ride from JFK airport – traffic jam is terrible in New York – I finally arrived at The Ludlow Hotel in East Village area. It was 7pm and I immediately noticed the bar & restaurant both full of a chic and trendy crowd. No doubt, this is THE place to be.
Living
The next morning I had more time and I was more “fresh” to see the lobby’s interior design. One word: STUNNING. The overall has been made with taste by Sean Macpherson and I really love every single piece. Just look at those gorgeous leather sofas!
The winter garden is truly amazing with its natural light and gives lot of character to the hotel. I spent many hours there on daytime just chilling with my laptop and friends, so nice. Should I mention the rooftop terrace on Manhattan and its fitness room offering 360 degree views?
Accommodation
Well, guys, this is New York: standard rooms are small. I strongly recommend to book at least a Studio King room and not below, just to avoid disappointment.
This being said, the room design is neat and follow the Ludlow’s atmosphere: casual chic and NYC iconic. Materials and furnitures have been carefully selected and that’s very pleasant, especially for a 4-but-almost-5-star hotel.
The best part is certainly the bathroom and its golden pieces. I don’t know where they found that idea, but it’s absolutely gorgeous and totally coherent with the rest of the design. Love it!
Dining
Breakfast is never included in room rates so you can choose to take it at Dirty French – the hotel’s restaurant – or not. I definitely recommend to do it since it’s very tasty. The L’Hôtel dish (scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast) is fantastic!
I also enjoyed dinner there. Remember, I told you this is a cool and trendy place at night time: it means the place is crowded with loud music like it’s usual in NYC. So be prepared, personally it’s not for me. Regarding food and meal: PERFECT. A sharp French cuisine.
Level of exigency
Service is pretty discreet, especially front desk and housekeeping. I think the place is more known as a trendy bar & restaurant than hotel, and so is focused the staff. Not a big issue, just don’t come there expecting a Peninsula or Waldorf Astoria service, that’s not the purpose.
Conclusion
The Ludlow Hotel is really a nice place to enjoy a casual chic atmosphere in the trendy East Village area, at decent distance from Financial district and Central Park. The place to be for hipsters and design lovers! The other option to consider in the district would be a luxurious Airbnb renting, together with an external cleaning service from NYC.
